Introduction / History

The Angoram District in East Sepik province is well known in Papua New Guinea as the home of the Right Honorable Chief Sir Michael Somare (1936-2021), the nation's founding Prime Minister and an influential leader until the time of his death. It is also the home of the Bun, one of the most remote people groups of Angoram District.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Bun may be small in number, but they retain a strong cultural identity. They all continue to speak their traditional language as their primary language. Many also speak Tok Pisin and around half the population are literate in Tok Pisin.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most hold tightly to their animistic religious beliefs. Fear of offending the spirits often characterizes animistic beliefs. Thank God that around 40 percent of Bun identify as Christian.

What Are Their Needs?

The Bun people need to be delivered from fear of the spirit world. They need to understand the power and glory of Jesus Christ, the one who casts out dark spirits.

Prayer Points

Pray for a spirit of wisdom and revelation that they may know how much the God of Jesus loves them.
May God bring the Bun into a season of spiritual and material abundance.
Pray that God's perfect love drives out all fear!
Ask the Lord of the harvest to thrust out workers to help bring the Bible to the Bun in a language and format that they understand well.
